Must we offer milk to children during the school day?
It looks like milk is back on the menu. Our article explains that from January 2015, all maintained schools, and some academies, will be required to offer milk during the school day.
This latest development comes after a long history of political furore caused by spilled milk.
Although the removal of free school milk began in 1968, when Harold Wilson’s government cut milk for secondary school pupils, scrapping free milk for over sevens in 1971 earned Margaret Thatcher a nickname that linked her name to the controversial policy in the public imagination.
Back in 2010, ministers considered cutting free milk for under fives, but ultimately abandoned the idea, perhaps in recognition of the policy's divisive history.
